Texas Democrats Congratulate Sen. José Rodríguez; New Texas Senate Democratic Caucus Chair

Today, State Senator José Rodríguez (El Paso) announced his election as the new Texas Senate Democratic Caucus Chair, succeeding State Senator Kirk Watson (Austin).

The son of migrant farm workers, Sen. Rodríguez was born in Alice, Texas. From an early age, he worked in fields throughout the country to help support a family of nine.

Sen. Rodríguez was elected in 2010 to represent Texas Senate District 29, which includes the counties of El Paso, Hudspeth, Culberson, Jeff Davis, and Presidio. He represents both urban and rural constituencies, and more than 350 miles of the Texas-Mexico border. [Texas State Senate]

Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement:

“Sen. José Rodríguez knows that Texas families are working hard to make ends meet, build a future, and get ahead. From humble roots as the son of migrant farm workers, José learned the strength and grit of our communities. He knows they deserve the best for their elected leaders.

“Throughout his life of service, José has shown that we must all defend our neighbors, protect the vulnerable, and do right by Texans. He’s led by example. There is no doubt in my mind that Sen. Rodríguez is ready to take on the challenge of Senate Democratic Chair.

“Texas Democrats congratulate our new leader in the Senate. He is a fighter and a hard worker. ¡Muchas felicidades, amigo!”
