Senate District 29 LGBTQ Advisory Committee hosts Out @f the Box Open Mic Night

El Paso – The Senate District 29 LGBTQ Advisory Committee will host Out @f the Box, an open mic night to celebrate National Coming Out Day, from 6-9 p.m. Thursday at Glasbox, 210 Poplar.

National Coming Out Day is an internationally observed day of awareness to celebrate individuals who identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual and many more identities. “Coming out” is the act of sharing an aspect of one’s sexual orientation and/or gender identity with other and for many LGBTQIA+ folks it has marked a significant time and process in their lives. The event is open to all, with the 6-7 p.m. segment oriented to families.

“Out of the Box is an all-ages open mic night celebrating National Coming Out Day, a day to recognize individuals’ powerful acts of coming out and owning their truth as a member of the LGBTQ spectrum. This event will give the opportunity for individuals to share their personal coming out experience whether through a poem, artwork, or a story,” said Adriano Perez, a member of the LGBTQ Advisory Committee. “This will be a safe space for everyone and our intention is for this event to be a powerful and celebratory event for everyone that respects and honors individuals with varying degrees of ‘out-ness.'”

The LGBTQ Advisory Committee is one of seven committees that are set up to work with the office of Senator JoséRodríguez to:

  1. Effectively represent our community and the state on priority issues
  2. Inform and engage the District 29 community in decision-making at the highest levels of state government
  3. Empower constituents and increase civic participation

“The LGBTQ Advisory Committee has created an event that allows individuals to express the process they have gone through to be themselves, and provides a safe place to do so. I hope this will help others to find the strength to be themselves with their families and their community, and I’m proud to support the event,” said Senator Rodríguez.
