Get covered: 100 hours to go for ACA deadline
We have begun the countdown of 100 hours until the deadline for uninsured people to sign up for health insurance. The deadline is at 9:59 p.m. MST, Monday, March 31.
The state delegation, Sen. José Rodríguez, Rep. Joe Pickett, Rep. Marisa Marquez, Rep. Joe Moody, Rep. Naomi Gonzalez, Rep. Mary Gonzalez, as well as U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke and County Judge Veronica Escobar, urge you and your loved ones to get covered! If you already have health insurance, help a friend or neighbor sign up by logging onto www.healthcare.gov.
With more than six million Texans — or about one in four — uninsured, Texas has the highest uninsured rate in the country. This includes over one million children. In El Paso County, the percentage of uninsured is even higher with about one in three El Pasoans lacking health insurance.
Through the insurance exchange or “marketplace” created by the Affordable Care Act, we anticipate about 800,000 Texans will be able to afford to buy health insurance. That would reduce our rate of uninsured to less than 20 percent! Locally, an estimated 24,000 El Pasoans are eligible for tax credits that will significantly reduce the cost of health insurance.
There are just 100 hours left. The website is working and the call center is open 24 hours a day.
If you sign up by the end of open enrollment your coverage will begin on May 1st.
The Obama Administration has announced that some people will be given a special enrollment period, beyond the deadline, if they can show they were not able to enroll because of an error by the federal exchange or by the Department of Health and Human Services.
This special enrollment period could be particularly helpful to people with special circumstances and complex cases.
